Which Hardwood Flooring Type and Species Is Right for Your Home
Since time immemorial, hardwood flooring has been the most popular type of floor ever used in many homes around the world, particularly in the US. Though concrete flooring is also more common these days, hardwood flooring is more widely used because it’s affordable and durable. Moreover, hardwood flooring materials are abundant, so they are always available almost everywhere in the country.
If you want to use hard flooring for your home, you must be aware of several options you can choose from. The quality, beauty, and comfort of your home depends on the type of hardwood flooring you will choose. Nevertheless, all of them are good and beneficial.
# Common Types and Species of Hardwood Flooring
# Oak Wood Flooring
Oak wood is the most widely used hardwood flooring in the US. This type of wood is not only hard but is also durable. In fact, you can find a lot of antique homes and furniture that are made of oak wood. Using oak as hardwood flooring is good for carpets and linoleum as its grains have clean-cut and fine grades, so transitions are smoother. The best thing about oak is that it’s resistant to insect and fungal attacks.
However, oak can be easily scratched. This is probably because it can be easily shaped and curved. In addition, oak wood can easily be stained by a liquid spill. Aside from that, it easily fades when exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period of time.
# Hickory Wood Flooring
There are many types of hardwood, but hickory offers the combination of hardness, strength, density, and rigidity. Hickory is shock resistant. It means it’s like concrete that can absorb quite a bit of pressure. Furthermore, it doesn’t require much maintenance. It’s not sensitive to spills and not vulnerable to termites and does not discolor as easily in the sun.
On the other hand, hickory is a bit more expensive than any other type of hardwood. There are various factors that determine its price, but it’s difficult to find a cheaper one. Another problem is that hickory is hard to sand if there is a scratch to remove. It’s also difficult to install as it’s too harder to cut.
# Maple Wood Flooring
Hardwood is more expensive than any other type of wood, but maple wood is the cheapest among all types of hardwood. If you want the benefits that hardwood flooring offers without spending so much, maple is ideal for you. It’s as durable as other types of hardwood such as hickory. It’s also easy to maintain.
However, maple is also like other types of “medium” hardwood that are vulnerable to scratches and stain. The real problem with maple wood is its vulnerability to moisture and humidity. The moisture and humidity cycle easily damages maple wood, so keep that in mind when setting humidity levels in your home.
